Headshots:  The Perfect Headshots for Your Brand (A Step By Step Guide)

Having professional headshots is critical to your growth. It also makes social media, website design and content marketing so much easier. Many of our clients have them done 4 times a year, so they have a catalog of fresh content in varying locations, clothing, angles and framing.

I’ll be walking you through the headshot journey using my Professional Headshot Blueprint. You can download the free guide right here:  https://kathrynporritt.com/headshots

In it, you’ll find some great advice on how to plan your headshots for your brand and what elements are needed for the perfect headshot. But, before we get into the how’s and the why’s of headshots, there is one major point we have to address… Foundations!

GIRL, ARE YOU READY FOR YOUR CLOSE-UP?

YOUR BUSINESS FOUNDATIONS COME FIRST...

It’s crucial you have done your foundation work before you can even begin to think about headshots, as you want them to speak to your ideal target client and be congruent with your brand.

Need a quick recap on what those foundations are?

– Know your lifestyle goal and be crystal clear on your “why”
– Know your Unique Selling Point – what makes you unique, different and special.
– Know your ideal client intimately.
– Have solid online foundations – websitebrandingsales funnelssocial media

If you’re not feeling confident that you have all this firmly set in place, don’t panic! You can pick up the phone and have a chat with our team who can guide you through the processes of getting your foundations locked in tight.

Once you do, then you’re ready for your close up!

HEADSHOTS NOT ONLY BRING YOU TO LIFE FOR YOUR CLIENTS, THEY SHOWCASE YOUR BRAND IN A HUMAN WAY

WHY DO YOU EVEN NEED HEADSHOTS?

You might be asking yourself if all this planning is really necessary. It’s just some photos, right? WRONG.

Headshots are not JUST photos. They are so much more! They represent you, your business, and your brand.

You are the face of your business and your headshots will speak volumes to your potential clients and customers. Get it wrong and you’ll be doing yourself a real disservice and making life so much more difficult than it really needs to be.

Not only that, but headshots give clients and consumers that little extra peace of mind. They can see you are a real live human being! When people can see who they are dealing with, they feel more comfortable and confident in doing business with that person. Remember, visibility is important!

So, let’s get to the headshot process.

STOP IT WITH THE SILLY ROT: YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE PERFECT TO TAKE THE PERFECT HEADSHOTS FOR YOUR BUSINESS

USE A PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOT PHOTOGRAPHER

First and foremost, get yourself a professional photographer. Don’t be tempted to ask your best buddy to take a few quick snaps on their smartphone. They might look great on your personal Instagram account, but they are not going to cut it for your professional business.

And absolutely no selfies!

Remember, this is your professional image we’re talking about here so don’t ruin that with amateur headshots. You want high-quality images that will mirror the high-quality of your brand. And, shop around! Don’t just go for the first photographer you find.

A great photographer will be versatile, but they may also have their own style which either matches or clashes with your brand image. So, take your time and find one that fits.

WHAT KIND OF HEADSHOT IMAGES WILL YOU NEED?

When you meet with your photographer, ask them to give you a selection of images with different angles and framing.

Think about where you are going to use these photos. For example, you’ll need about 12-20 wide angled shots to use as headers on your website, lead magnets, sales pages, etc.

And, you’ll also need some full-body shots against a white background, and then images with you on the left of the frame, on the right, and in the center.

Mix it up so you have lots to work with!

One rule of thumb for framing, is the left and right photos need have you taking up only 20% of the frame and a neutral background on the remaining 80%.

Then, make sure that you look directly at the camera. Just imagine you’re looking into the face of a new client. Eye-contact is key!

You may also want to have some photos outside of the studio. Think back to the foundations of your business and choose something that resonates with your brand and your target audience.

Selecting a few different brand-affirming locations will not only add visual interest to your website or media, but they can also help tell your brand’s story.

YOUR BRANDED HEADSHOTS WARDROBE

Think about what suits you best and wear what you are most comfortable in – within reason of course! You might be most comfortable in your sweatpants, but they are probably not the best wardrobe option for your headshots!

But, generally the rule is, when we feel good, we look good.

Give a thought to what branding you are using (colors, styles) and then your audience. Are they corporate, casual, wild and wacky, or fit and fun? Then dress to match. I suggest taking 4-6 changes of clothing with you to your photoshoot so that you can have a variety of looks.

Also, why not put together some Pinterest boards and play around with different styles and see what resonates best with your brand.

I also highly recommend getting a professional makeup artist to do your makeup for the photos – because I guarantee you will need more makeup than you normally wear in the shots.

You may also want to invest in a professional blow dry the morning of your shoot too.

With a little care beforehand you can get some really strong and gorgeous headshots that not only showcase your brilliance but also visually reinforce your brand AND help you to grow your business.
