I talk with literally thousands of business owners every single year and the same thing comes up over and over again.

They are so frustrated with what they’re doing.

>> They’re working 100 hour weeks and seeing little return.
>> They have a great business on the outside but they can’t stand turning up any more.

IN THE BEGINNING...

Most people start a business based around their passion. They want to live that passion every day and so they see the opportunity to achieve that is by monetizing that passion – they think, because they have been told this over and over, that if you have a business based on passion, you will never work a day in your life.

The problem is that most passions and making money are two very different things. If you have a passion say for say spiritual healing or graphic design or brewing organic Kombucha or interior design – all of these things are extremely different to running a business.

We’re talking craft versus business acumen.

You can be passionate about your craft, but the minute you want to monetize it, you are adding business acumen to the requirements of skills.

And, it’s not just opening the business… it’s then:

>> Marketing
>> Sales
>> Websites
>> Sales Funnels
>> Staff
>> Social Media
>> Accounting
>> Organizational Structure
>> Legals and Insurance
>> Processes and workflows

Not to mention scaling the business, which may include investing in consultants and managing their contracts, taking on investors, dealing with credit facilities, payment service providers, wholesalers and manufacturers, and all manner of other businessy things.

That passion isn’t really delivering any more, is it?

I hear it over and over and over again from almost every business owner I speak with. And for them, it’s almost like a big sigh of relief to say it out loud when they admit to me that their business simply isn’t what they dreamt it would be.

LET'S BE HONEST... GO BACK TO WHY YOU STARTED YOUR BUSINESS IN THE FIRST PLACE.

HOW TO BRING THE PASSION BACK TO YOUR BUSINESS

For most people it’s a conversation that starts with being extremely honest about what you really want. Your why has got to be enormously important to you. And you won’t be able to identify that “why” without some serious introspection and honesty.

I’m not talking about going all woo woo here – but a very clear articulation of your ideal lifestyle.

>> What do you really want?
>> How do you really want to live?
>> How much do you really want to earn?
>> How many hours do you really want to work?
>> What are the important things you really want to achieve with your life?

Spending the time being clear on your “why” sets the tone for everything else because, if your business isn’t supporting your ideal lifestyle then what’s the point?

Seriously, wouldn’t you just go and work in an office or a cafe instead or putting in all the energy and time and money into a business that you don’t love?

So, get this first step right, and you are on your way to fixing what’s broken with your business.

Does your business fit your ideal lifestyle goals? 

If it doesn’t, then what can you do to manipulate it, shift it, shape it into the business of your dreams?
